Committees
Each of the following major Military Affairs Division committees
supports the growth of our
community, military and defense industries.
1. The Defense Mission Task Force (DMTF), Chaired by
Maj Gen (Ret)Larry Fortner, USAF, was formed in 1989 as a community
response to the potential closing {Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC)
Commission} of any of our area military installations. Since its
inception the DMTF has assisted the community, both civilian and
military, to protect its Department of Defense assets and to:
Work with the military facilities to retain and enhance the missions
of the facilities
Provide support for the facilities by acting as a liaison between the
facilities and local
communities
Support congressional action through dialogue with legislative
liaisons
Identify additional opportunities for the community to assist the
military in mutually
beneficial arrangements
The DMTF is an open committee and meets on a bi-monthly basis. Meetings
are held at the
Chamber of Commerce, 7:30 a.m. 9:00 a.m. Scheduled meeting dates for
the remainder of
2008 are: September 4, October 2 and November 18. Minutes of the groups
activities are available for
review.
2. The Colorado Defense Mission Coalition (CDMC),
Chaired by COL (ret) Tony Koren,
USA, was formed in May 2005 to address specific issues related to the
impact of the growth of Fort Carson on the region. For example, in 2006,
the CDMC in conjunction with Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments were
successful receiving a grant application from the Department of Defense
Office of Economic Adjustment to develop a Fort Carson Regional Growth
Plan to help our local community identify factors (e.g housing, schools,
and roads
) critical to successful growth in and around Fort Carson and
our local area.
4. The Military Spouse Career Committee is a local
organization with ties to USA 4 Military Families initiative which seeks
to engage and educate state policymakers, not-for-profit associations,
concerned business interests, and other state leaders about the needs of
Military members and their families. Currently, efforts are being
focused on spouse employment, including unemployment compensation for
transferring military spouses, in-state tuition allowances, financial
readiness, education, and the pressing needs of severely injured Service
members and their families. |
